Budget negotiations are continuing at the Capitol as we close in on the session’s final weekend. Things can really move quickly, and I’ll be sure to keep you updated as we make progress in the next few days.
Real ID Fix
Apart from working on the budget, we’re also passing other important bills. This week, the legislature passed – and the governor signed – legislation to make our state Real ID-compliant. It’s an important step to make sure our residents can board airplanes and enter certain federal facilities with their state-issued ID card. We were one of the last states to pass this legislation, but we were able to get it done this session. It’s great for Minnesotans to have the peace-of-mind to know they can fly to see loved ones when the state starts issuing these Real ID-compliant licenses.
Teacher Licensure
Recently, the legislature passed a bill to streamline the process for teachers to become licensed in Minnesota. It would cut some of the red tape for out-of-state teachers or professionals with vast experience in their field to obtain a license. What we’re seeing in our state – especially in rural Minnesota – is a shortage of teachers to fill open jobs. We can help solve that issue by making the licensure process easier to navigate for those wishing to educate our children.
Despite input and compromises from many lawmakers, education groups, and other stakeholders, Governor Dayton vetoed our bipartisan proposal. It’s disappointing to see politics get in the way of a bill that would help kids in schools throughout Minnesota.
Student Tour
I grew up just outside the small town of Butterfield, Minnesota, and was fortunate to speak to students from that area this week at the Capitol. It was especially fun as my nephew was one of the students on the tour. It was great seeing kids from where I grew up, and to think of all the possibilities they have in their lives going forward.
