Legislative Update (May 5, 2017)

Friday, May 5, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Happy Friday! It feels like spring, and I’m sure you’re all excited about that. Before you know it, the kids will be out of school for the summer! Like our local schools, the legislature is working hard to complete our business on time.

Bill Passing

Just yesterday, I passed a bill, HF1186, on a bipartisan vote of 119-11. The legislation modifies provisions related to mental health services and the qualifications for who is able to provide mental health services. The goal of the bill is to create easier access for mental health practitioners to provide care in day treatment centers.

Our day treatment facilities need more capable mental health professionals, and this bill is a step towards helping patients receive essential treatment. I’m proud to pass this legislation with bipartisan support, and hope to see it approved by the Senate, and signed into law by Governor Dayton.

School Visit

Earlier this week, sixth grade students from Stewartville took a field trip to the Capitol, and I was lucky enough to speak with them. They had some great questions about being a legislator, working in St. Paul, and the remodeling of the Capitol building. Thanks to all the students, teachers and chaperones who made the trip!

National Day of Prayer

Yesterday was National Day of Prayer, and I was honored to take part in a program with a bipartisan group of legislators outside the Capitol. This is such an important day for all of us to say a prayer for our family and loved ones, as well as those we may not agree with. For all of you praying for our state, thank you.
