Legislative Update (April 8, 2017)

Saturday, April 8, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Happy Saturday! We wrapped up our busiest week of the session as we passed the remainder of our large budget bills. As the legislature starts our Easter/Passover break, here’s an update from the Capitol.

Agriculture Bills

One of the bills that could have the biggest impact on our area relates to agriculture. I was thrilled to see this bill pass with a UNANIMOUS vote. It’s great when we can have this type of bipartisan support to pass legislation. Important provisions contained in this bill include:

  • Ag emergencies, such as tractor rollovers, Avian Flu, and noxious weeds.
  • Rapid response to plant pests and pathogens.
  • Growing and diversifying our agro-economy, in areas like industrial hemp and biofuel.
  • Continued support for production agriculture research, farm safety, Ag Education, and youth development.
  • Creating a dedicated Pollinator Habitat and Research account.

Health and Human Services

Just yesterday, we passed our health and human services budget proposal. As a member of this committee, I’m proud of the work that’s gone in to crafting this legislation. I was fortunate to have some of my bills included. I authored one portion to create a pilot program to prevent early dental disease. I’ve been working closely with dentists this session on legislation to help those who don’t have adequate access to dental care. Another provision of mine helps adoptive and foster families. This is such a personal issue for me, it’s rewarding to see its inclusion as part of the larger bill moving forward.
