Legislative Update (March 3, 2017)

Friday, March 3, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

My Bills

On Thursday, I joined Minnesota dentists at a press conference to talk about my bill, HF1340. This bipartisan legislation increases the state’s funding rates for dental care. Currently, Minnesota is dead last (that’s right, 50th out of 50 states) in Medicaid payment rate for pediatric dental services. My bill would move us to the middle of the pack, and could greatly increase the dental and overall health of Minnesotans struggling to obtain dental care.

I’m also working on a bill, HF1229, which received a hearing in the HHS Reform Committee this week. The legislation clarifies statute relating to the Ombudsman for Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. Additionally, this bill will clarify the ability of the ombudsman to review and access records to ensure that proper mental health services are being delivered. I’m happy to see this bill moving forward, and will keep you posted on its status.

Budget Surplus

Tuesday brought news of a larger surplus in the state budget. It now stands at $1.65 billion, an increase from the previous forecast this fall. What we’ve heard from Minnesotans around the state is a need to use a portion of this surplus to provide needed tax relief for the middle class. Along with tax relief, we’ll look to create a balanced state budget that doesn’t grow faster than family budgets. As we’re preparing our larger budget bills, please reach out and share your opinion.

Student Opportunity

This week, my nephew took part in the House of Representatives High School Page Program. If you’ve never heard of this initiative, it’s a weeklong experience for high school juniors to come to the Capitol, assist in committees, meet legislators, and be a part of the floor session. If you know someone who might be interested, please click here.

Opportunities likes these for young people provide amazing real-world experience. I know multiple people who work at the House that started out as pages. You never know what doors these opportunities will open, or who you might meet. Whether it’s the page program, the conservation corps for college students, or another internship or volunteer opportunity you find, take a chance!

Here's a list of volunteer options near our area, internships at the Mayo Clinic, and even opportunities through Olmsted County.

Have a great weekend, and please stay in contact if you need anything.

Best,
