Gov. Tim Walz and legislative leaders are set to announce a budget deal Sunday evening as lawmakers near Monday’s constitutional deadline for adjournment.

House Speaker Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park), Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa) and Walz are scheduled to unveil details of the deal at a 6:30 p.m. news conference.

The breakthrough was announced shortly before 5:30 p.m., and follows days of negotiations behind closed doors among the leaders. Even with a two-year spending agreement hammered out, a special session would appear necessary for legislators to finish their work.
