Legislative Update

Friday, March 8, 2024

Beloved Community

Session continues to fly by as we work to pass bills that will improve the lives of Minnesotans. First I’d like to shout out all of the fantastic constituent groups I met with this week. Hearing from constituents is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of this job, here’s who I met with this week:

  • MN Social Service Association
  • Healthcare Leaders Association
  • Minnesota Citizens for the Arts
  • MN Nurses Association
  • MN Zero Waste Coalition
  • Land Stewardship Project
  • Unrestrict MN
  • Mental Health Legislative Network

Corporate Profits

In the Taxes Committee, which I chair, we received a presentation on corporate profit and tax revenue from a researcher at the Roosevelt Institute. In recent years tax receipts from corporate profits have increased significantly, resulting in increased tax revenue, which we are reinvesting in our communities. While this is positive news, corporations hiding their true earnings, often through international holdings, is pervasive. That is why we heard legislation to require that corporations show their full tax returns. This will lead to more transparency so we can make informed decisions, ensure legislation is working as intended, and guarantee that they pay their fair share. You can watch this committee here.

Debt Fairness Act

Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the country. That’s why DFLers have introduced the Debt Fairness Act. Too many people are saddled with unmanageable debt, and our current laws have been insufficient at addressing this dilemma. Medical debt depletes peoples’ rainy-day funds, causes them to incur credit card debt, and to forgo medical treatment altogether. The Debt Fairness Act aims to unburden Minnesotans from medical debt, and help working and middle class families make ends meet.

Tax Reforms to Benefit Minnesotans

I support a tax system that will benefit families, seniors, and working class Minnesotans. Last year, I voted for a tax bill that has now made Minnesota the most fairly taxed state in the nation. This means rather than providing giveaways to wealthiest among us and large corporations, Democrats are ensuring the Minnesotans who count on it most will have more money in their pockets and have the economic stability they need to thrive. For instance our child tax credit will benefit working families by providing up to $1,750 for each dependent, or how we exempted social security income from being taxed for the vast majority of seniors.
