Legislative Update

Monday, March 27, 2023

Beloved Community,

The first few months of session has passed in a bit of blur as we are striving to be historically productive. For too long gridlock and conservative opposition has dominated politics at the Capitol, so we are working hard to make up for lost time.

As the Chair of the Taxes Committee I’ve been busy putting together the House tax budget over the last several days. I am approaching it with a focus on ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share so we can fund social programs and investments working class Minnesotans need.

Driver’s Licenses for All

The Governor signed our Driver’s Licenses for All bill, which would allow all Minnesota residents to earn a driver’s license regardless of immigration status! This was an amazing and emotional day. Watch my speech on the House floor here. Thank you to the community members who have been working tirelessly to change this racist law for the last 20 years when it was first implemented. You can watch the exciting moments after it passed here.

Trans Refuge Bill

Last Friday at 5 a.m. we passed the Trans Refuge bill. The legislation prevents out-of-state laws from interfering in the practice of gender-affirming health care. With far right attacks against the trans community on the rise across the country it’s critical that we guarantee the health and wellbeing of our trans neighbors and loved ones. I’m proud to have voted for this legislation and will continue to stand up for our queer community.

Restore the Vote Act

The Governor signed into law the Restore the Vote Act. The bill would restore voting rights to individuals convicted of a felony upon completion of incarceration. Twenty-one other states, including our neighbor North Dakota, already restore voting rights upon release, and I was proud to cast my ballot to join them. This is a great bill which makes our state more just and democratic.

Pathways Home Act

A few weeks ago we passed the Pathways Home Act. This act will significantly increase funding to critical state programs that support shelter providers across Minnesota in their direct response and service to Minnesotans who are currently unsheltered. While we need more than shelters to solve our housing crisis, they are still critical to saving lives and getting folks the resources they need to work towards a permanent solution. This is a continuation of my work when I was Chair of the Homelessness Prevention Division and I’m proud to see it move forward, watch my speech on this bill here.
