Critical Assistance for our Community

Thursday, March 11, 2021

Beloved Community,

We are fast approaching the one year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd and the following trauma that our community suffered through. Everyday we see the destruction brought onto our community by police tyranny and outside agitators. We still bear the scars of those events that hit us like a tornado. We have been fighting for state aid to help our BIPOC businesses recover ever since these terrible events, but Republicans have refused to lend us a helping hand. If there is a flood in Hastings, or a tornado in Detroit Lakes, we would step up for that community, and offer them whatever resources they need to recover. This is what we do as Minnesotans. But when a tragedy strikes a community of color, and hurts immigrants and those underrepresented at the Capitol, our calls for help are met with silence.

This is an issue of equity, fairness, and common decency. As a city, we contribute far more to the state than we receive in turn. We are finally asking for some help, and to get some of our own money back to ensure that our main street businesses can recover. I will continue to fight every day for the funding that our community has earned. It is time that we get what is ours.

Budget Forecast

State budget officials recently announced a new economic forecast, highlighting a turnaround in our economic outlook. This is good news, but the fact remains: too many Minnesotans are still struggling as a result of the health and economic impacts from the pandemic. Those who were already struggling before the pandemic have experienced even greater hardship over the past year. We need to come together to invest in what Minnesotans value most – like excellent public schools, health care, and support for small businesses and families – to ensure we can all pull through this crisis.
