Legislative Update

Thursday, July 21, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

The tragic events of the past month have been unnerving as scenes of civil unrest and violence against law enforcement have been broadcast across the nation. It is a time that finds many Americans feeling frustrated and angry.

Despite what you may have seen on TV or read in the newspaper, the vast majority of Americans including myself, fully support our brave men and women in uniform and grieve for those that we have recently sadly and tragically lost. Please be sure to pray for law enforcement and their families.

The comments made by Governor Dayton in the wake of the Philando Castile tragedy, before any investigation had taken place, were reckless and extremely disappointing. They do not reflect the views of legislative leaders in our state. As elected officials, we have a responsibility in defending the constitution, one that states every citizen is entitled to due process.

Furthermore, I was disappointed to see a number of teachers arrested in downtown Minneapolis this week for willfully blocking a street in a protest against law enforcement. I am concerned how this may reflect on the impressionable children that they teach. We need to be sure that our young people understand the importance in respecting law enforcement.

As for folks on both sides of the debate, let’s remember to practice kindness towards one another. Be a positive example for your children. They are watching.

Please, pray for an end to the violence.
